Biology ๐Ÿธ

Biology H (Lueschow) ๐Ÿญ

Info:

An intensive and rigorous biology class which will give you solid grounds for any future biology courses. This tends to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest class available for Freshmen. However, Mrs. Lueschow is a great teacher! There are numerous interesting labs in class and a lot of class discussion. But there is a lot of homework and studying must be done by yourself at home. Be prepared for 20-30 minutes reading/studying biology per night. Plus there is a great opportunity to learn anatomy in the rat dissection! (2nd sem). If you do well in this class, AP Biology will be much easier.

Summary:

-Mrs. Lueschow is great at answering questions

-Labs basic but give fundamental information of overall lab chapter

-Class is very work intensive compared to middle school

-Really good introduction to helping you understand the cores of biology

Amoeba Sisters - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb2GCoLSBXjmI_Qj1vk-44g

++ Great for easy to understand illustrations of topics

-- May be too oversimplified for test

The Organic Chemistry Tutor - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWpbFLzoYGPfuWUMFPSaoA

++ Gives a better understand and goes slowly over concepts in an understanding manner

-- Does not cover everything that is done in class, does not use many visuals (similar to Khan Academy)

Bozeman Science - https://www.youtube.com/user/bozemanbiology

++ In depth, informational, detailed videos about topics

-- May not be the most interesting/engaging videos

AP Tip: Bozeman videos explain Bio topics in enough detail to be very helpful for AP Bio.

Tips:

-Don't be afraid to ask questions

-Your first test will be the hardest because you are new to the class and format. You will probably get a bad grade, but don't let that stop you, you will be able to use that experience and do better on the next one.

Biology AP (Barrington) ๐Ÿž

Info:

Similar to Bio H, but all the topics are discussed more in depth. If you took Bio H with Lueschow, you will be well setup to do well in Bio AP. Mr. Barrington has been teaching at Dunlap for a long time and often has great stories to tell! There is little homework, but tests are a major part of the grade and multiple choice exams can be difficult.

Helpful Resources:

Khan Academy- https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology

++ Great detailed videos

++ Sal Khan

-- Not all concepts from the textbook are in the course

Bozeman Science - https://www.youtube.com/user/bozemanbiology

++ In depth, informational, detailed videos about topics

-- May not be the most interesting/engaging videos

AP Tip: Bozeman videos explain Bio topics in enough detail to be very helpful for AP Bio.

Tips:

-Take notes, especially on hard concepts. I made "one pagers" which covered an entire complex topic on one page. These were super useful for studying for the AP exam.

-The AP test is hard. Although you prepare a lot in class, the essays on the AP exam usually cover biological reactions that you haven't heard of, so you need good understanding of Krebs Cycle (respiration) and Calvin Cycle (photosynthesis) to connect it to information you know.

Biology (Kearns)

Info:

Biology I is a lab-oriented science course. In Biology I the students will study the nature of life which includes cells and cell processes, ecology, genetics, and evolution. Special projects may be included as part of the course requirements.

Tips:

  • Take notes and read them before a test or quiz, it will really help you.

  • Be focused on the day before a test or a quiz because Ms. Kearns will go over all the concepts on the test/quiz.

  • Read the Study Stack Flashcards that she posts on Canvas for every test/quiz.

  • If you don't understand an assignment or a topic, ask Ms. Kearns, she is really good at helping.
