Photography 1 (Hale)

Teacher: Mrs. Hale

Room: Art 1

Prerequisites: none

Length: 1 semester

Offered to: all students

Info:

Photography 1 is a great class to learn about the art of photography. It is one of the few art classes that does not require Art Foundations, so it is great for any student who wants a much less academically rigorous class during their school day. I found it to be a very fun class and Mrs. Hale is always willing to help and give suggestions. We use film cameras (digital cameras are used in Digital Photography 1). At the beginning of the year we learn the parts of these types of cameras including how to use them and how to load and unload film.

We do many different photography projects throughout the year, each having a different theme. The projects that we did when I was in this class (1st semester 2021-2022) included one where we made photograms (photos without cameras), a starting project where we get used to the cameras, rules of composition, mood and emotion, action, vintage, color tinting, and night shots. The types of projects and the order they are done in may vary year to year. We usually have two weekends to go out and shoot photos for these projects and a roll of film usually can have 24 photos but for some projects we use film that has space for 36. I personally had a lot of fun in this class so I would suggest taking it if you have a free space in your schedule.

After taking these photos, we develop the film in the darkroom

The final is just a project in the darkroom using photos taken from previous projects.

Summary:

  • Mrs. Hale is very friendly and insightful.

  • You don't need prior experience in photography to take this class

  • We do a variety of projects throughout the year

  • The class provides loaner cameras so you don't need to go out and buy your own, but you can use your own film camera if you have one.

  • No prior knowledge of photography is required to take this class

Helpful Resources:

  • You can check out some example photos that I took while in the class below.

Tips:

  • Make sure to be able to find some time over weekends to go out and take photos.
